How to safely turn a computer on and recognize the login screen.
Did you know your computer is like a sleeping robot? It needs a special 'secret handshake' to wake up and start playing games or helping you learn!
To wake up the computer, we need to find the Power Button. This button usually has a special symbol that looks like a circle with a small line at the top: inside a . On some computers, the button is on the front of the big box (the tower). On other computers, like tablets or laptops, it might be on the side or the keyboard. When you press it once, a small light usually turns on to show the computer is (on) instead of (off).
Quick Check
What does the symbol on the power button look like?
Answer
A circle with a line at the top.
After you press the button, the screen might stay dark for a moment, or you might see a spinning circle. This is called booting up. The computer is 'waking up' its brain and getting all its files ready for you. It is very important to be patient. If you press the button over and over, the computer might get confused and take even longer to wake up! Just like you need a moment to stretch when you wake up, the computer needs a moment to think.
1. Walk to your computer station. 2. Press the power button one time gently. 3. Fold your hands in your lap. 4. Count to slowly while the screen turns on.
Quick Check
Why do we wait patiently after pressing the button?
Answer
Because the computer is 'booting up' and getting its brain ready.
Once the computer is awake, it will show you the Login Screen. Think of this as the 'Front Door' of the computer. You will see a pretty picture and a box. This box is where you tell the computer who you are! Usually, you will see your name or a place to type it. Once you 'check in' at the login screen, the computer knows it is time to work with you.
1. Look at the screen after the spinning circle disappears. 2. Find the white box in the middle of the screen. 3. Look for your name or a picture of yourself. 4. Use the mouse to click inside the box so you can start typing.
