Distinguishing between the two main surfaces of our planet.
Imagine you are an astronaut floating in space, looking down at our home. What colors do you think you would see the most?
Earth is often called the 'Blue Planet.' This is because most of our world is covered in water. When we look at a map (a flat drawing of Earth) or a globe (a round model of Earth), we use the color blue to show where the water is. This includes huge oceans, deep lakes, and wiggly rivers. If you see a blue spot on your neighborhood map, it might be a local pond or a swimming pool!
Quick Check
If you are looking at a globe and see a large blue area, what are you looking at?
Answer
You are looking at water.
The parts of the Earth that we walk on, build houses on, and plant gardens on are called land. On maps and globes, land is usually colored green or brown. Green is often used to show places with lots of trees and grass, like a park or a forest. Brown is often used to show dry places or tall, rocky mountains. Even though land feels very big to us, there is actually much less land than water on our planet!
Let's look at a simple map of a park. 1. Find the blue circle. That is the duck pond (water). 2. Find the green square. That is the grassy field (land). 3. Find the brown line. That is the dirt walking path (land).
Quick Check
Which two colors are most commonly used to show land on a map?
Answer
Green and brown.
If we could cut the Earth into four equal pieces, we would see that water covers almost three of those pieces! In math, we can say that water covers about of the Earth. Land only covers about of the Earth. This is why when you spin a globe, your finger is much more likely to land on a blue spot than a green or brown spot.
Imagine you have a globe in front of you. 1. Spin the globe with your eyes closed. 2. Stop the globe with one finger. 3. Open your eyes. If your finger is on blue, you found water! If it is on green or brown, you found land.
You are drawing a map of an island. 1. Draw a circle in the middle. Color it green for the jungle. 2. Draw a brown triangle on the island for a mountain. 3. Draw blue all around the island to show the ocean. 4. How many colors did you use for the land? (Answer: 2).
What color represents the ocean on a map?
If you see a green area on a globe, what is it?
True or False: There is more land on Earth than there is water.
Review Tomorrow
Tomorrow morning, look at a map or a picture of Earth. Can you point to one area of land and one area of water?
Practice Activity
Draw a picture of your favorite place outside. Use blue for any water you see and green or brown for the ground!
