Learn that the Earth's land is divided into seven massive pieces called continents.
Imagine you are a giant bird flying high above the clouds. Looking down, you see huge pieces of land surrounded by deep blue water. Did you know you are standing on one of the seven giant 'puzzle pieces' that make up our world?
Our planet Earth is covered in two main things: water and land. Most of the water is in our huge oceans. The largest pieces of land on Earth are called continents. Think of a continent like a giant island, but much, much bigger! While an island might have one beach, a continent can have many countries, mountains, and forests all on one piece of land. There are exactly of these massive land pieces on our planet.
Quick Check
What do we call the largest pieces of land on Earth?
Answer
Continents
Each of the continents has its own name and special features. They are: North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica. Asia is the largest continent of all, while Australia is the smallest. Antarctica is the coldest because it is at the very bottom of the world and covered in thick ice!
Let's count them together to make sure we have all : 1. North America 2. South America 3. Europe 4. Africa 5. Asia 6. Australia 7. Antarctica
Quick Check
How many continents are there in total?
Answer
7
When you look at a world map, the continents stay in the same spots. North America and South America are on the left side (the West). Europe, Africa, and Asia are grouped together in the middle and right. Australia is a big island sitting by itself in the bottom right. Antarctica is the long white strip at the very bottom.
Imagine you are taking a trip: 1. You start in the USA, which is in North America. 2. You fly across the ocean to see the Eiffel Tower in France, which is in Europe. 3. Then, you go south to see lions in the wild in Africa. You have just visited different continents!
Even though they are all 'big,' some are much bigger than others. We can rank them from the biggest to the smallest. Asia is the biggest. Africa is the biggest. Australia is the biggest (which means it is the smallest).
If you have a map and you want to find the biggest continent, you look for Asia. If you want to find the smallest, you look for Australia.
Question: If Asia is and Africa is , which one covers more land? Answer: Asia, because is the top rank for size!
