Learning how to listen to our bodies to figure out what we are feeling.
Did you know that your body is like a secret detective? It gives you 'Body Clues' to tell you how you feel before you even say a word!
Just like a car has lights on the dashboard to show if it needs gas, your body has Body Clues. When you have a big feeling, your brain sends a message to your body. These clues help us understand if we are happy, sad, or mad. For example, if your face feels very hot, your body might be telling you that you are angry. If your tummy feels like it has 'butterflies' jumping inside, you might be feeling nervous or worried.
Quick Check
What do we call the signs our body gives us about our feelings?
Answer
We call them Body Clues.
1. Imagine you are standing at the top of a very tall slide. 2. You feel your heart beating fast against your ribs. 3. You are smiling and can't wait to go down. 4. Because you are smiling, your fast heart is a clue for excitement!
Quick Check
Name two feelings that can make your heart beat fast.
Answer
Fear (being scared) and Excitement.
Different feelings like to hide in different spots. Anger often hides in your hands (making them turn into tight fists) or your teeth (making them mash together). Sadness might feel like a heavy weight on your chest or make your eyes feel 'watery.' Worry usually hides in the tummy, making it feel tight or shaky. When we find where the feeling is hiding, we can name it and help it feel better.
1. You cannot find your favorite stuffed animal. 2. Your eyes feel wet and your chest feels very heavy. 3. You check your 'Body Clue' map. 4. You realize these clues mean you are feeling sad.
We can group our body clues into two big teams: Calm and Upset. A calm body feels 'soft.' Your muscles are relaxed, your breathing is slow, and your hands are still. An upset body feels 'hard' or 'tight.' Your shoulders might go up to your ears, and your breath might be short and fast. If we count our breaths, a calm body might take breath every seconds, while an upset body takes breath every second!
1. You are waiting a long time for your turn on the swing. 2. Your hands are squeezed into tight balls. 3. Your breathing is very fast. 4. Your body feels 'hard' and 'tight.' 5. These clues tell you that you are upset (frustrated) and might need to take a deep breath to get back to 'soft.'
If your tummy feels like 'butterflies' are flying inside, you might be feeling...
Which of these is a clue for a CALM body?
